Laboratory Technician – 18‑Month Fixed‑Term Contract

About the role

We are seeking a Laboratory Technician to join UK Biobank on an 18‑month fixed‑term contract. You will support the storage, management, processing and preparation of millions of biological samples that underpin world‑leading health research. The role will also involve a key part in the relocation of the biobank’s sample archive to a new state‑of‑the‑art laboratory.

Key responsibilities

• Process biological samples following standard operating procedures and quality standards.
• Prepare, handle and store samples using approved laboratory equipment and methods.
• Record laboratory activities and sample information accurately in laboratory information systems.
• Perform routine equipment checks, maintenance and laboratory housekeeping.
• Support the safe transfer of samples between facilities during the laboratory move.
• Assist with the setup of new laboratory systems, workflows and storage infrastructure.
• Collaborate with colleagues to meet daily throughput and quality targets while adhering to health, safety and quality procedures.

Required profile

• Experience working in a laboratory environment or a strong interest in laboratory‑based work.
• Understanding of basic laboratory procedures and good laboratory practice.
• Strong attention to detail and ability to follow written procedures accurately.
• Comfort with repetitive, process‑driven tasks while maintaining high standards.
