Lead Architect – Control Centre Operations

About the role

National Energy System Operator is seeking a Lead Architect to shape the architectural strategy for its nationwide electricity control centre operations. You will define the target state and multi‑year roadmap for critical operational systems, ensuring they support a modern, decarbonised energy grid.

Key responsibilities

• Define and own the end‑to‑end architectural vision for Control Centre Operations systems.
• Develop and maintain a pragmatic architecture roadmap and lead decision‑making across legacy and future platforms.
• Provide architectural oversight for mission‑critical systems, including SCADA, guaranteeing availability, resilience, security and safety.
• Guide integration of bespoke solutions with vendor platforms and influence external supplier roadmaps.
• Establish architecture standards, deliver assurance for major change initiatives and mentor technical teams.

Required profile

• Strong strategic thinking with the ability to set direction for complex technical landscapes.
• Proven experience influencing senior stakeholders and collaborating across technology, cyber, infrastructure and operations teams.
• Demonstrated capability to coach and develop technical talent.
• Eligibility to work in the UK and obtain National Security Vetting clearance.

Required skills

• Experience with control‑centre or operational technology environments.
• Deep knowledge of SCADA systems and real‑time operational platforms.
• Hands‑on experience with Red Hat OpenShift and container platforms.
• Strong infrastructure and networking expertise.
• Proficiency with cloud platforms, particularly Microsoft Azure.
