Lead Cloud Engineer – AWS & VMware (Remote, 2 days onsite)

About the role

The Lead Cloud Engineer will oversee the design, optimisation and support of complex AWS environments while integrating with existing VMware vSphere infrastructure. This 12‑month contract role is primarily remote with two days per month on‑site in Hackney, offering the chance to drive cloud governance and mentor a team of engineers.

Key responsibilities

• Lead the management, optimisation and ongoing support of complex AWS environments to ensure security, scalability and high availability.
• Drive cloud governance, architecture decisions and operational improvements using AWS best practices and certifications.
• Support and maintain VMware vSphere/virtual server environments, including performance optimisation and integration with AWS.
• Collaborate with Cyber Security teams to implement security controls, remediate vulnerabilities and ensure compliance.
• Provide technical leadership and mentorship to engineers, coordinating stakeholders and guiding infrastructure upgrades, migrations and operational challenges.

Required profile

• Proven experience leading complex AWS cloud environments.
• Hands‑on experience with VMware vSphere and virtual server management.
• Ability to work closely with cyber security teams and embed security best practices.
• Strong technical leadership and mentorship capabilities.
