Lead Design Engineer – Mechanical Projects

About the role

We are seeking a Lead Design Engineer to head the mechanical design of large‑scale projects for a well‑established engineering firm in Manchester. The role combines technical expertise with leadership to deliver material handling, heavy fabrication and welding solutions across sectors such as Oil & Gas and Power.

Key responsibilities

• Lead the design and development of mechanical engineering projects from concept to completion.
• Create, review and approve detailed drawings, 3‑D models and technical documentation.
• Oversee material handling systems, heavy fabrication, welding and on‑site installation activities.
• Collaborate with manufacturing, production and site teams to ensure practical, cost‑effective designs.
• Ensure compliance with engineering standards, specifications and health & safety requirements.
• Provide technical mentorship to junior engineers and coordinate with customers, suppliers and internal departments.
• Support continuous improvement and contribute to engineering best practice.

Required profile

• Degree, HNC or HND in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline.
• Approximately 10 years of experience in engineering design, with at least 3 years in material handling, heavy fabrication or large‑scale project delivery.
• Proven experience leading design teams in heavy‑industry environments such as Oil & Gas or Power.
• Strong problem‑solving, communication and organisational abilities.
• Full UK driving licence (desirable).
