Lead Engineer – Hospital Facilities Management

About the role

The Lead Engineer will be responsible for the safe, efficient and reliable operation of New Hall Hospital’s engineering services. This senior position combines hands‑on technical work with line‑management duties, ensuring that all maintenance activities meet the highest standards of quality and compliance.

Key responsibilities

• Provide engineering, maintenance and breakdown support across the hospital site, responding promptly to any issues.
• Review and allocate work orders in the Maintenance Management System (MMS) and direct resources accordingly.
• Act as the primary day‑to‑day customer interface for all engineering matters.
• Line‑manage on‑site engineering operatives, delivering direction, coaching and performance oversight.
• Execute the Planned Preventative Maintenance routine using a Computer‑Aided Facilities Management (CAFM) system.
• Meet Service Level Agreement (SLA) targets for reactive calls and coordinate specialist external contractors when required.
• Participate in hospital governance meetings to align engineering activities with organisational objectives.
• Maintain site safety by adhering to Health & Safety regulations and managing the permit‑to‑work system for high‑risk tasks.
• Provide first‑line support for medical gases, author low‑hazard permits and deliver practical training.

Required profile

• Proven experience in hospital or large‑scale facilities engineering, including line‑management responsibilities.
• Strong understanding of Health & Safety legislation and the ability to enforce safe working practices.
• Demonstrated ability to manage preventive and reactive maintenance programmes within defined SLAs.
• Excellent communication skills for interfacing with clinical staff, senior management and external contractors.
