Lead Ophthalmology Scrub Practitioner

About the role

We are seeking an experienced Lead Ophthalmology Scrub Practitioner to join the Ophthalmology Service at Cherwell Hospital in Banbury. The role involves providing expert scrub support, clinical leadership and ensuring high‑quality patient care within the operating theatre.

Key responsibilities

• Assist the Theatre Manager in delivering safe, evidence‑based patient care and managing theatre resources.
• Lead the ophthalmology theatre team, offering clinical advice, support and mentorship.
• Provide skilled assistance to surgeons during ophthalmology (and orthopaedics, if required) procedures.
• Prepare the theatre each day, maintain equipment according to manufacturers’ guidelines and coordinate operating lists.
• Support clinical governance, budgeting and departmental communication with consultants and other hospital departments.
• Act as a Surgical First Assistant when appropriately trained.

Required profile

• Proven experience as a scrub practitioner in ophthalmology, with a willingness to work in orthopaedics.
• Demonstrated clinical leadership and ability to guide a multidisciplinary team.
• Strong understanding of patient safety, safeguarding and quality standards.
