Lead Site Reliability Engineer (SRE Squad Lead)

About the role

Join the Department for Business and Trade’s Digital, Data and Technology directorate as a Lead Site Reliability Engineer. You will guide a squad of engineers in designing, delivering and continuously improving reliable, secure and scalable cloud services that underpin critical UK digital products.

Key responsibilities

• Lead and mentor a team of Site Reliability Engineers, fostering an inclusive and high‑performing culture.
• Collaborate with product, delivery and architecture teams to ensure platform services meet business and user needs.
• Provide technical leadership across DevOps and SRE practices, driving reliability, sustainability and continuous improvement.
• Design, build and maintain cloud‑based infrastructure using infrastructure‑as‑code.
• Establish observability practices – monitoring, logging, metrics and alerting – to enable proactive service management.
• Define and embed Service Level Indicators (SLIs), Service Level Objectives (SLOs) and error budgets.
• Support the creation and optimisation of CI/CD pipelines for safe, frequent releases.
• Oversee live service reliability and guide teams through incident response and post‑mortems.

Required profile

• Proven experience leading SRE or DevOps teams in a complex, multi‑service environment.
• Strong communication and stakeholder management skills.
• Ability to balance hands‑on technical work with strategic leadership.
