Lead Software Engineer

About the role

Saab UK is seeking a Lead Software Engineer to join its Seaeye Underwater Robotics Business in Fareham. The role involves designing and implementing software solutions for subsea vehicles, driving innovation and ensuring technical excellence across complex projects.

Key responsibilities

• Lead the design and implementation of software for underwater robotics applications.
• Take responsibility for project delivery and coordinate multidisciplinary engineering teams.
• Integrate inputs from various software and engineering disciplines to produce cohesive software products.
• Act as the technical authority, interfacing directly with customers and stakeholders.
• Develop and maintain system‑level requirements, architecture, and safety concepts.
• Estimate work effort, plan team loading, and manage resources and budgets.
• Establish and enforce industry best‑practice processes and software quality standards.
• Mentor and develop junior engineers, delegating tasks effectively.

Required profile

• Minimum 7 years of experience as a Senior Engineer.
• Degree in a relevant engineering discipline.
• Proven ability to lead multi‑disciplined software teams.
• Experience creating software architecture for complex systems from scratch.
• Strong system‑level thinking and ability to derive detailed requirements.
• Solid understanding of safety concepts and design principles.
• Excellent communication skills for both technical and non‑technical audiences.
• Capability to estimate, plan, and manage workload without over‑loading team members.
• Experience establishing processes that meet industry best practices and quality standards.
• Track record of mentoring junior engineers and managing project resources.
