Learning Mentor & Teaching Assistant (Primary)

About the role

We are looking for an enthusiastic Level 3 Teaching Assistant to work as a Learning Mentor in a Year 5 classroom. The role combines morning classroom support with afternoon targeted intervention for EAL pupils, including phonics‑based literacy work.

Key responsibilities

• Support the Year 5 teacher in delivering engaging lessons and managing classroom activities.
• Assist individual pupils and small groups to meet learning objectives.
• Prepare resources, organise the classroom environment and promote positive behaviour.
• Plan and deliver intervention sessions for groups of 6‑8 EAL pupils, focusing on English language, reading, writing and phonics.
• Monitor, assess and record pupil progress during interventions and adapt activities as needed.
• Occasionally cover the Year 5 class during short‑term teacher absences or training days.

Required profile

• Level 3 Teaching Assistant qualification (or equivalent).
• Experience working in a primary school setting, preferably Key Stage 2.
• Confidence to lead whole‑class learning and supervise pupils independently.
• Experience delivering interventions and supporting pupil progress.
• Good understanding of phonics, literacy development and EAL needs.
• Strong communication, organisational and behaviour‑management skills.
• Positive, proactive and flexible attitude.
