About the role

We are pleased to offer an opportunity for a Materials Technician Apprentice to join the team, supporting the day‑to‑day operations of the laboratory and carrying out a range of testing on soil samples to help ensure accurate, reliable results in line with relevant industry standards. This apprenticeship provides an excellent foundation for a future career in materials testing and laboratory work, giving you the chance to develop hands‑on technical skills, use specialist equipment, and build your knowledge of soils and construction materials within a supportive environment.

Key responsibilities

  • Carry out a variety of laboratory tests on soil samples following industry standards and specifications.
  • Prepare soil samples for testing, ensuring correct handling, labeling and storage.
  • Operate laboratory equipment and testing techniques to produce accurate results.
  • Record test data and results clearly for further analysis and reporting.
  • Assist with calibration, checking and maintenance of technical laboratory equipment.
  • Identify and report any issues with equipment, samples or test results.
  • Follow health and safety procedures, including proper use of PPE.
  • Maintain accurate laboratory records and keep work areas clean and organised.

Required profile

  • Curious about how materials behave, with strong attention to detail and a commitment to accurate, reliable results.
  • Comfortable working in a structured, routine‑driven environment and following standardised test methods.
  • Committed to health and safety, quality standards and laboratory procedures.
  • Physically able to be on your feet all day and handle manual handling tasks.
