Lightning Direct Effects Engineering Internship (12.5 months)

About the role

The Lightning Direct Effects (LDE) group at Airbus is looking for an undergraduate engineering student to join a 12.5‑month placement in Filton. You will work on aircraft protection against lightning strikes and electrostatic discharge, contributing to design, testing and certification activities across multiple Airbus programmes.

Key responsibilities

• Contribute to electromagnetic hazard analysis, standardisation, electrical architecture and certification tasks.
• Design and define commissioning or investigative tests, interact with test laboratories and analyse test results.
• Develop optimized lightning protection solutions for aircraft fuel tanks and fuel systems using analytical and test techniques.
• Support the creation of harmonised design policies that benefit multiple programmes and components.
• Collaborate closely with fuel‑systems and structures departments to ensure effective protection strategies.

Required profile

• Undergraduate studying an Engineering or Technical degree (Electrical, Aeronautical, Mechanical or Physics).
• Demonstrated curiosity and strong interest in aerospace engineering.
• Clear communication and organisational skills to plan and deliver project objectives.
