Live-In Groundsman

About the role

The Live-In Groundsman maintains the sports ground and associated facilities of Wetherby Pembridge, covering natural grass pitches, artificial surfaces, tennis courts, landscaped areas, boundaries, the pavilion, changing rooms and other site facilities. The site is kept ready for school use during the day and for commercial hirers in the evenings and weekends. The postholder also provides a responsible on-site presence, completes opening and closing procedures and responds to reasonable out-of-hours incidents, reporting to the Operations and Commercial Lets Manager.

Key responsibilities

• Maintain and prepare natural grass pitches (mowing, line marking, aerating, fertilising, seeding, watering, repairs) and assess pitch conditions
• Maintain artificial surfaces and tennis courts, including brushing, weed and moss control, infill monitoring and net adjustments
• Prepare pitches, courts and facilities for school activities, fixtures, tournaments and commercial bookings, and inspect them before and after use
• Maintain landscaped areas, paths, car parks and boundaries, and carry out seasonal work such as frost, snow and ice clearance
• Keep the pavilion, changing rooms, toilets, showers and communal areas clean, stocked and well presented
• Carry out minor repairs, monitor services and operate grounds machinery safely
• Provide a responsible on-site presence, complete opening and lock-up procedures and respond to out-of-hours incidents

Required profile

• Previous experience in grounds, sports turf, estate maintenance or a similar practical role
• Reliable, proactive and organised, able to work independently
• Good communication skills and a professional manner
• Understanding of safeguarding responsibilities in a school environment
• Flexibility for evening, weekend and out-of-hours work
• Horticultural or grounds maintenance qualifications are an advantage
