Makaton Qualified Teaching Assistant (Full‑Time Temporary)

About the role

We are looking for a dedicated Teaching Assistant who holds a Makaton qualification to support learners with additional needs at St. Helen’s College, Knowsley Campus. This full‑time, temporary position offers the chance to work closely with teaching staff and help create an inclusive classroom environment. You will work in a supportive educational setting, collaborating with staff to tailor activities that meet individual learner goals.

Key responsibilities

• Provide one‑to‑one and small‑group support for learners with SEND or additional learning needs.
• Use Makaton effectively to facilitate communication and engagement.
• Assist teachers in planning and delivering accessible learning activities.
• Promote a safe, positive and encouraging atmosphere in the classroom.
• Monitor learner progress and report observations to teachers.

Required profile

• Level 2 Teaching Assistant qualification.
• Current Makaton qualification with practical experience.
• Experience supporting learners with special educational needs.
• Strong communication and interpersonal abilities.
• Enhanced DBS check (or willingness to obtain one).
• Willingness to work flexible hours as required.

Required skills

• Makaton signing and communication.
• Basic use of educational technology tools.
