Mechanical Design Engineer – Automation & Robotics

About the role

We are seeking a Mechanical Design Engineer to design and develop bespoke automated machinery and robotic systems for a specialist manufacturer in West Sussex. The role involves creating detailed 3D models, drawings and Bills of Materials to support innovative production equipment.

Key responsibilities

• Design mechanical components, fabricated assemblies, machined parts and pneumatic systems using SolidWorks.
• Produce detailed manufacturing and assembly drawings, as well as Bills of Materials.
• Support new product development, continuous improvement projects and technical problem‑solving activities.
• Collaborate closely with electrical, controls, manufacturing and production teams.
• Participate in design reviews and assist with machine build, testing and commissioning when required.

Required profile

• HNC/HND or Degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline.
• Previous experience in machinery, automation, robotics or special‑purpose equipment environments.
• Proficiency with 3D CAD software, ideally SolidWorks.
• Strong understanding of manufacturing processes including machining, fabrication and assembly.
• Experience producing detailed engineering drawings and Bills of Materials.
• Knowledge of pneumatic systems is advantageous.
• Ability to manage multiple projects and work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.
