Mechanical Engineer – Design of Nuclear Micro‑reactor

About the role

Cambridge Atomworks is seeking an enthusiastic Mechanical Engineer to join its design engineering team. You will work on the concept, design, analysis and documentation of mechanical and structural systems for the ODIN nuclear micro‑reactor, progressing the project from early concepts to licensing and deployment.

Key responsibilities

• Design reactor components such as vessels, pipework, mechanical and thermal‑management systems, and instrumentation layouts.
• Design deployment equipment including fuel‑handling and lifting gear.
• Capture and decompose requirements, perform engineering calculations and simulations (structural, thermal, stress) to validate designs.
• Develop 2D/3D drawings, P&IDs and design documentation using CAD tools.
• Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams (reactor physics, thermal hydraulics, materials, safety, licensing) and external consultants, manufacturers and suppliers.
• Ensure compliance with nuclear codes and standards (ASME, ANSI, regulatory guidance).
• Contribute to design reviews, failure‑mode analysis and regulatory documentation.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Nuclear Engineering or a related field.
• Several years of engineering experience in a highly regulated industry (e.g., nuclear, defence, aerospace).
• Strong problem‑solving ability and effective communication skills.
• Team player comfortable working in a cross‑disciplinary environment.

Required skills

• Proficiency with CAD software.
• Experience using Finite Element Analysis (FEA) tools.
• Capability to perform structural, thermal and stress analysis.
• Knowledge of ASME and ANSI nuclear codes and standards.
• Ability to produce 2D/3D engineering drawings and P&IDs.
