Mechanical Engineer – NHS Estates Technician

About the role

We are seeking a qualified Mechanical Engineer to join a large NHS Estates & Facilities team in Essex. You will work on‑site within a busy acute healthcare environment, ensuring critical mechanical infrastructure operates reliably to support patient care.

Key responsibilities

• Carry out Planned Preventative Maintenance (PPM) and reactive maintenance across the estate.
• Diagnose, fault‑find, repair and maintain boilers, pumps, motors, valves, pipework, water and HVAC systems.
• Maintain air handling units, ventilation, chiller plant, heating, and hot/cold water services.
• Support medical gas system maintenance where trained.
• Respond to emergency breakdowns to minimise clinical disruption.
• Undertake installation, refurbishment and improvement works.
• Complete maintenance records and work orders using CAFM systems.
• Collaborate with contractors, clinical teams and operational departments.

Required profile

• NVQ Level 3 in Mechanical Engineering, Building Services, Heating & Ventilation, Plumbing or equivalent.
• Completed Mechanical Engineering apprenticeship or relevant City & Guilds qualifications.
• Experience in building services, estates maintenance or facilities management, preferably within healthcare.
• Strong fault‑finding and diagnostic abilities.
• Good understanding of Health & Safety legislation.
