Mechanical Maintenance Engineer – Manufacturing (Up to £45k)

About the role

We are looking for a mechanically‑biased Maintenance Engineer to join a well‑established SME manufacturing organisation in South East England. The role supports large‑scale equipment serving the defence and offshore energy sectors, reporting to the Engineering Manager and working a 7:00 am‑3:30 pm shift with occasional overtime.

Key responsibilities

• Provide first‑line mechanical maintenance and repair for production machinery.
• Carry out planned preventative maintenance (PPM) and respond to breakdowns.
• Perform machining tasks such as turning, milling and lathe operations.
• Support general site and building maintenance as required.
• Assist with continuous improvement and equipment upgrade projects.
• Maintain accurate maintenance records and ensure safety compliance.
• Identify reliability improvements and propose preventative solutions.

Required profile

• Completed engineering apprenticeship or equivalent industrial training.
• Recognised engineering qualification (City & Guilds, BTEC or similar).
• Mechanical maintenance experience in manufacturing or heavy industry.
• Basic electrical knowledge (beneficial but not essential).

Required skills

• Strong mechanical fitting and fault‑finding capability.
• Experience with hydraulics, pneumatics and rotating machinery.
• Machining skills – milling, turning and lathe work.
• Welding capability (MIG or ARC), certifications desirable.
• General workshop and fabrication experience.
