Mechanical Maintenance Technician – Temp to Perm

About the role

The Higher Education organisation is seeking an experienced Mechanical Maintenance Technician to join its Estates and Maintenance team on a temporary‑to‑permanent basis. You will work within a multi‑skilled team delivering planned and reactive maintenance across a complex estate, ensuring critical mechanical infrastructure remains safe, compliant and operational.

Key responsibilities

• Carry out planned and reactive maintenance on mechanical plant, equipment and associated systems.
• Diagnose faults, undertake repairs and implement solutions to minimise downtime.
• Support operation, maintenance and optimisation of building services infrastructure.
• Update maintenance records and job reports using CAFM systems.
• Assist with risk assessments, method statements and health‑safety compliance.

Required profile

• Recognised Mechanical Apprenticeship and NVQ Level 3 (or equivalent) in Mechanical Engineering.
• Proven experience maintaining and repairing mechanical building‑services systems.
• Strong fault‑finding and diagnostic abilities.
• Good understanding of health and safety legislation and safe systems of work.
• Ability to interpret technical drawings and manuals.

• Pumps, expansion vessels and pressure systems.
• Hot‑water calorifiers, plate heat exchangers, steam systems and gas‑fired boilers.
• Ventilation, air‑handling, heating, cooling and fresh‑air systems.
• Chillers, DX and VRF cooling technologies.
• Domestic hot and cold water, compressed air and public health engineering systems.
• Ground‑source and air‑source heat pumps, district heating and CHP plant.
• Control systems, actuators, sensors and fire‑protection sprinklers.
