Modern Matron – Older Adults Mental Health

About the role

The Modern Matron will lead the inpatient Older Adults Mental Health service in Gloucester, providing strategic and operational direction across multiple wards. Reporting to senior Trust leadership, the role combines clinical oversight with service improvement to ensure safe, compassionate care for older patients.

Key responsibilities

• Provide strategic leadership and day‑to‑day management of inpatient mental health wards.
• Motivate and support Ward Managers and multidisciplinary teams to achieve high performance.
• Drive continuous quality improvement, evidence‑based practice and service redesign projects.
• Ensure compliance with KPIs, governance standards, the Mental Health Act and the Mental Capacity Act.
• Lead workforce planning, recruitment, retention and staff development initiatives.
• Manage budgets, resources and oversee clinical governance, patient safety and risk management.
• Act as escalation point for complex clinical and operational issues and participate in on‑call senior management rota.

Required profile

• Registered Mental Health Nurse (RMN) with current NMC registration.
• Significant senior leadership experience within mental health services.
• Proven track record of managing complex inpatient services and multidisciplinary teams.
• Experience of leading service improvement and change management initiatives.
• Strong knowledge of clinical governance, risk management and patient safety.
