Motor Underwriter – Mid Market

About the role

The Motor Underwriter will join a specialist commercial division focused on mid‑market and mid‑corporate fleet business. Working from Maidstone three days a week, you will manage an existing portfolio of commercial fleet policies and drive profitable underwriting results.

Key responsibilities

• Profitably underwrite and manage a commercial fleet portfolio within delegated authority limits.
• Assess fleet risks, review coverage, and determine appropriate pricing and terms.
• Utilise underwriting tools, appetite guides and technical expertise to support decision‑making.
• Develop and maintain strong broker relationships through regular engagement.
• Negotiate terms to secure profitable outcomes while meeting customer needs.
• Handle larger, more complex cases and provide technical underwriting solutions.
• Monitor account performance, retention rates and loss ratios.
• Identify under‑performing accounts and implement targeted action plans.
• Collaborate with internal underwriting and technical teams to deliver best‑in‑class service.

Required profile

• Proven experience underwriting commercial fleet business.
• Strong technical knowledge of the commercial insurance market.
• Excellent trading and negotiation skills with a commercial mindset.
• Demonstrated ability to build and sustain broker relationships.
• Strong analytical and numerical capabilities.
• Relevant qualifications such as Cert CII or Dip CII are advantageous but not essential.
