Optical Systems Engineer

About the role

Archangel Lightworks Ltd is developing laser‑communication technology for space‑enabled networks. We are seeking an Optical Systems Engineer to lead the design, integration and testing of optical subsystems that operate in extreme environments.

Key responsibilities

• Design laser‑communication terminal optical/photonic subsystems for harsh conditions.
• Define requirements, perform trade‑off analyses and optimise performance versus cost.
• Model optical performance, optimise designs and conduct tolerancing studies.
• Carry out breadboard testing to validate models and support system‑level trials.
• Assemble, integrate and test optical subsystems and manage supplier relationships.
• Provide technical leadership for subsystem development projects.

Required profile

• Proven experience defining requirements and performing trade studies for optical systems.
• Hands‑on experience with photonic components such as CW and pulsed lasers, detectors, modulators and fibre/free‑space optics.
• Laboratory testing expertise for optical hardware.
• Ability to work closely with product leads and multidisciplinary engineering teams.

Required skills

• Zemax (or similar) optical design and optimisation.
• Optical system modelling and tolerancing.
• Laser (continuous‑wave and pulsed) handling.
• Optical detectors, receivers and modulators.
• Fibre and free‑space optics integration.
• High‑speed data converters, FPGA and embedded system knowledge.
• Knowledge of optical communication protocols (CCSDS, SpaceWire, Ethernet).
• Experience with high‑power lasers, optical amplifiers and safety standards.
• Optical instrument calibration and alignment techniques.

What we offer

• Opportunity to work on cutting‑edge space communication technology.
• Fast‑paced start‑up environment with strong technical mentorship.
• Competitive compensation and benefits package.
