Part‑time Lecturer – GCSE English & Functional Skills

About the role

Merton College is looking for an inspiring part‑time Lecturer to deliver GCSE English and Functional Skills to adult learners. The role starts in August 2026 on a 0.8 FTE permanent contract and includes some evening teaching.

Key responsibilities

• Plan and deliver inclusive, high‑quality lessons across a range of English levels.
• Act as a personal tutor, supporting learners’ academic progress and wellbeing.
• Develop and continuously improve curriculum resources and assessment materials.
• Maintain accurate records, manage administrative duties and meet tight scheduling requirements.
• Utilise educational technologies and collaborative tools to enhance learner engagement.

Required profile

• Degree or Level 6 qualification in English or a related subject.
• Teaching qualification (or willingness to work towards one).
• Proven experience teaching English to adults in Further Education or a similar setting, including Functional Skills and GCSE.
• Strong understanding of adult learning principles and inclusive teaching strategies.
• Excellent planning, organisational and administrative abilities.

Required skills

• Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
