Payroll Manager – Up to £40k + Bonus

About the role

We are seeking an experienced Payroll Manager to lead the end‑to‑end payroll function for a diverse client portfolio in the Carlisle/Workington area. You will ensure accurate, compliant payroll processing while building strong client relationships within a supportive, office‑based environment.

Key responsibilities

• Manage payroll for a varied, potentially high‑volume client portfolio.
• Process full payroll cycles, including starters, leavers, salary changes, and statutory deductions.
• Collect and process timesheets, expenses, and adjustments.
• Calculate PAYE, National Insurance, pensions, and statutory payments (SMP, SSP, SPP).
• Handle salary sacrifice schemes and annual pay reviews.
• Prepare and submit RTI filings and pension submissions.
• Liaise with HMRC, pension providers, and other external bodies.
• Maintain audit records, ensure data integrity, and support compliance.
• Produce payroll reports and respond to client queries promptly.
• Contribute to system improvements and process enhancements.

Required profile

• Minimum 5 years’ payroll experience, preferably in a practice or bureau.
• Strong knowledge of UK payroll legislation (PAYE, NI, pensions).
• Experience handling multiple clients or high‑volume payrolls.
• Confident using payroll systems with solid Excel and IT skills.
• High attention to detail, organisational ability, and proactive attitude.
