Personal Adviser - Leaving care

About the role

The Personal Adviser will join Tameside Metropolitan Borough Council’s Leaving Care team, providing vital support to young people transitioning out of care. This role focuses on building trusted relationships, advocating for care leavers, and ensuring access to education, employment, housing and health services.

Key responsibilities

• Work within statutory and departmental guidelines for young people leaving care, including asylum‑seeking children.
• Participate in the office‑based duty system and deliver direct support to young people and their networks.
• Implement child protection procedures where risk is identified.
• Promote community‑based activities that aid long‑term independence.
• Liaise with external agencies on behalf of young people to coordinate services.
• Advocate for the wishes, views and feelings of each young person in all decisions.
• Support planning for education, training, employment, accommodation, housing and health services.
• Respect and promote cultural, religious, disability and sexual preferences of each individual.

Required profile

• Understanding of trauma‑informed practice and a commitment to ongoing learning.
• Ability to build strong, sustained connections with vulnerable young people.
• Excellent communication and advocacy skills.
• Willingness to work collaboratively with a wide range of services.
• Commitment to promoting independence, safety and belonging for care leavers.
