PhD Studentship: Low-Carbon Cements for Rail Infrastructure
Department of Engineering (University of Cambridge) · Cambridge
Job description
About the role
The University of Cambridge offers a four-year (1+3 MRes/PhD) studentship funded through the EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Future Infrastructure and Built Environment (FIBE3 CDT), in collaboration with Network Rail. The project studies low-carbon cement alternatives for low-risk rail infrastructure applications such as walkways, kerbs, drainage channels, signal bases, platform components, and mortars and grouts used for stabilisation, erosion control and repairs.
A subset of binders will be investigated after mapping cementitious binders and applications, and design and performance requirements. The work combines advanced material characterisation and mix design, early-age performance and modelling, sensor technology, and accelerated and long-term mechanical and durability testing, with the aim of delivering performance and whole-life carbon evidence needed for uptake on the rail network.
Required profile
- At least a high 2.1 degree, preferably at Masters level, in Civil Engineering or a relevant discipline, obtained by the start date.
- Strong interest in cementitious materials and experimental work.
- Fully-funded studentships (fees and maintenance) are available first for eligible home students; a limited number of international students may be considered later.
Applications are made online through the University of Cambridge Applicant Portal, stating the project title and supervisor's name, with a £20 application fee. Early applications are strongly encouraged.
