Planning & Highways Solicitor/Barrister

About the role

The Planning & Highways Solicitor/Barrister will join a local authority legal team in Gloucestershire, providing proactive and pragmatic legal advice on planning, development and highways matters. You will work closely with elected members, officers and external partners to support sound, lawful decisions.

Key responsibilities

• Advise on planning applications, enforcement and highway matters.
• Provide legal advice to planning committees, panels and officers.
• Support elected members on complex planning and enforcement issues.
• Draft, negotiate and review a wide range of legal agreements.
• Assist in the development and review of planning‑related policies and documents.
• Prepare for public inquiries, including evidence review and case preparation.
• Attend planning committee meetings and occasional court hearings.
• Prepare compulsory purchase orders and determine town/village green applications.
• Offer legal advice on public rights of way and other highways matters.

Required profile

• Qualified Solicitor or Barrister with substantial post‑qualification experience.
• Significant expertise in planning and highways law.
• Strong working knowledge of local government law and practice.
• Proven ability to manage a complex caseload independently.
• Excellent analytical and commercial awareness.
