Police Staff Investigator – Serious & Complex Crime

About the role

The PIP2 Police Staff Investigator conducts investigations into serious and complex crime, placing the victim at the centre of decision‑making. This 12‑month contract role is based in Southampton and offers full‑time or part‑time hours.

Key responsibilities

• Lead and contribute to investigations of serious and complex offences in line with PIP2 standards.
• Gather, record and retain intelligence and evidence from multiple sources in an admissible format.
• Develop investigative plans, identify lines of enquiry and allocate resources at force, regional or national level.
• Assess threat, harm and risk, implementing appropriate investigative and safeguarding strategies.
• Interview witnesses and suspects, conduct searches and custody procedures, and manage exhibits and case files.
• Provide victim‑focused support, including risk assessments and coordination with Victim Care Units.
• Respond to safeguarding concerns such as child abuse, domestic abuse, sexual offences and offences against vulnerable adults.
• Prepare detailed investigation reports and maintain accurate audit trails.

Required profile

• PIP2 accreditation (mandatory).
• Proven experience investigating serious and complex crime.
• Strong understanding of the criminal justice system.
• Demonstrable experience in complex information gathering and problem solving.

Required skills

• Strong communication and interpersonal abilities.
• Confident use of IT systems and investigative databases.
• Ability to analyse complex information and make sound investigative decisions.
• Effective team working and stakeholder engagement.
• Strong report writing and case file management.
