Press Officer

About the role

London Fire Brigade is looking for an experienced Press Officer to join its Communications Team during a high‑profile period of operational activity. The role will involve delivering timely, accurate and impactful media communications on issues such as wildfires, water shortages and major incidents across London.

Key responsibilities

• Respond to daily media enquiries from local, regional and national outlets.
• Draft media statements, briefing notes and quotes on behalf of Brigade representatives.
• Facilitate and coordinate media interviews and on‑site media management during incidents.
• Work closely with the Commissioner’s Office, Station and Borough Commanders to develop key messages.
• Support public‑safety campaigns, including wildfire prevention and water safety advice.
• Collaborate on social‑media and digital communications content.
• Build and maintain relationships with journalists and partner emergency services.
• Identify proactive media opportunities to showcase the Brigade’s work.

Required profile

• Proven experience in media relations or press handling, preferably within a public‑sector or emergency‑services environment.
• Confident communicator able to work under pressure and manage high‑profile incidents.
• Strong organisational skills and ability to liaise with senior leadership and external partners.
• Willingness to attend operational incidents and work flexibly across a hybrid schedule.

Required skills

• Excellent written and verbal communication.
• Ability to draft clear, concise media statements.
• Experience building journalist relationships.

What we offer

• 3‑month contract with the possibility of extension.
• Hybrid working – two days per week in the Southwark office.
• Pay rate of £26.47 per hour (PAYE) or £34.37 per hour (Umbrella).
