Prevention and Relief Officer

About the role

Southwark Council is seeking a dedicated Prevention and Relief Officer to support residents at risk of homelessness. You will work within the Housing Needs and Support service, delivering early‑intervention advice and helping people secure sustainable housing solutions.

Key responsibilities

• Carry out statutory homelessness assessments and make legally robust decisions under the Housing Act 1996 and Homelessness Reduction Act 2017.
• Develop, implement and review personalised housing plans with clear, realistic actions.
• Provide high‑quality advice on rights, responsibilities and housing options.
• Collaborate with residents, landlords, internal teams and external partners to prevent homelessness and sustain tenancies.
• Support residents facing financial hardship, health needs, safeguarding concerns, domestic abuse, mental health issues and other vulnerabilities.
• Connect residents with wider support services, including employment and health resources.

Required profile

• Passionate about helping vulnerable residents and preventing homelessness.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to manage a complex caseload and make independent decisions.
• Commitment to the council’s Fairer Futures ambition and equality agenda.

Required skills

• Knowledge of the Housing Act 1996 and Homelessness Reduction Act 2017.
• Experience conducting statutory homelessness assessments.
• Proficiency in developing personalised housing plans.
