Primary SEMH Teaching Assistant

About the role

Join a Good Ofsted‑rated specialist primary school in Southampton that supports children with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs. As a Primary SEMH Teaching Assistant you will work closely with pupils, teachers and external professionals to create a safe, nurturing environment where every child can thrive.

Key responsibilities

• Provide one‑to‑one and small‑group support for pupils with SEMH, autism, ADHD or attachment needs.
• Build trusting relationships using calm, consistent, trauma‑informed approaches.
• Assist with emotional regulation strategies and promote positive behaviour.
• Collaborate with teachers, parents and external agencies to plan and deliver tailored interventions.
• Maintain accurate records of pupil progress and behaviour.

Required profile

• Supportive, patient, non‑judgemental and flexible attitude.
• Excellent communication skills and ability to work as part of a team.
• GCSE Grade C/4 or above in English and Maths (or equivalent).
• NVQ Level 2 or 3 in Supporting Teaching and Learning, Childcare, Health & Social Care or related field (desirable).
• Experience working with young people, especially those with SEMH, autism or social communication difficulties (preferred).
