Principal Accountant

About the role

The Principal Accountant will lead the capital and fixed‑asset accounting functions, manage the Treasury operation and ensure compliance with legislative and accounting standards. This 6‑7 month contract offers a hybrid/flexible working pattern based in Stevenage.

Key responsibilities

• Lead capital and fixed‑asset aspects of budget monitoring, account closure and budget setting, including business case development.
• Manage the Treasury function, overseeing cash‑flow forecasting, investment and borrowing requirements.
• Ensure treasury, capital and fixed‑asset accounting processes comply with IFRS and other regulatory standards.
• Document and maintain up‑to‑date treasury and capital accounting procedures.
• Coordinate treasury and capital budgetary processes and produce the Capital Programme within the medium‑term Integrated Planning process.
• Support property, highways and technology services to keep fixed‑asset registers reconciled.
• Oversee year‑end valuations, debt‑management reporting and banking/third‑party contract arrangements.
• Liaise with auditors on treasury, capital and fixed‑asset accounting issues and ensure timely statutory returns.

Required profile

• Proven experience in treasury, capital accounting and fixed‑asset management.
• Strong knowledge of IFRS and UK accounting standards.
• Ability to lead cross‑functional teams and coordinate complex budgeting processes.
• Excellent analytical and reporting skills with attention to detail.
