Principal Development Management Planner (Interim)

About the role

This interim position with a Surrey-based local authority offers a senior planner the chance to manage a varied portfolio of major and strategic development proposals. You will work within a well‑resourced planning team to deliver key applications and support sustainable growth across the borough.

Key responsibilities

• Manage a caseload of major, strategic and complex planning applications from pre‑application through determination.
• Lead pre‑application discussions and negotiations with developers and planning consultants.
• Prepare high‑quality officer reports, recommendations and present them at Planning Committee.
• Provide professional planning advice to internal and external stakeholders.
• Negotiate planning obligations and application amendments where required.
• Liaise with statutory consultees, legal teams and elected members.
• Support junior planners and contribute to the effective operation of the Development Management team.

Required profile

• Degree qualification in Town Planning or a related discipline.
• Significant development management experience within a local authority environment.
• Strong experience handling major and complex planning applications.
• Excellent knowledge of planning legislation, policy and development management procedures.
• Experience presenting at Planning Committee.
• Ability to work independently in a fast‑paced planning service.
