Principal Engineering Geologist

About the role

Join a leading multidisciplinary engineering and environmental consultancy as a Principal Engineering Geologist. Based in Exeter, you will take senior technical and project‑leadership responsibility for delivering complex ground investigation programmes across infrastructure, residential, commercial and renewable energy projects.

Key responsibilities

• Manage ground investigation projects from tender through to completion.
• Design and specify intrusive investigations, including boreholes, trial pits and in‑situ testing.
• Supervise site operations, contractors and subcontractors.
• Review and interpret geological, geotechnical and environmental data.
• Produce and review factual and interpretative reports.
• Provide geotechnical advice on foundations, earthworks, slope stability and ground hazards.
• Control project budgets, programmes and client expectations.
• Lead client meetings and develop long‑term relationships.
• Mentor junior engineers and engineering geologists.
• Support business development, fee proposals and framework opportunities.
• Ensure safe, efficient delivery in line with industry standards.

Required profile

• Degree in Engineering Geology, Geology, Geotechnical Engineering or related discipline.
• Chartered status or working towards chartership with a relevant professional body.
• Significant consultancy experience in engineering geology and ground investigation.
• Strong understanding of geological and geotechnical principles.
• Extensive experience designing and managing ground investigations.
• Proven ability to produce and review interpretative reports.
• Excellent project management and client‑facing skills.
• Commercial awareness and experience managing project finances.
• Full UK driving licence.
