Principal Planning Officer – Development Management

About the role

The Development Management Principal Planning Officer will lead the assessment and determination of complex planning applications across major residential, commercial and mixed‑use projects. This full‑time position works on behalf of the Council, providing expert advice and ensuring robust decision‑making.

Key responsibilities

• Assess and determine complex planning applications, preparing high‑quality reports and recommendations for the Planning Committee.
• Interpret planning legislation, local policy and national guidance to support sound decisions.
• Represent the Council at pre‑application meetings, public consultations, site visits and Planning Committee hearings.
• Collaborate with developers, consultees, legal representatives and local communities.
• Support the Council in planning appeals, hearings and public inquiries.
• Mentor junior colleagues and contribute to professional development within the team.
• Promote continuous improvement of processes and maintain high standards of planning practice.

Required profile

• Extensive experience in planning, preferably with major residential, commercial or mixed‑use developments.
• Strong knowledge of planning legislation, local policies and national guidance.
• Excellent communication and stakeholder‑engagement skills.
• Ability to work independently and lead complex casework.
