Principal Telecommunications Engineer

About the role
We are seeking a Principal Telecommunications Engineer to lead the telecoms and security discipline across major on‑shore and off‑shore energy projects. The role sits within the Instrumentation and Automation function, providing technical leadership from feasibility through de‑commissioning while managing a team of engineers and designers.
Key responsibilities
- Lead and mentor a multidisciplinary team of engineers and designers on small and large projects.
- Perform detailed calculations such as optical link budgets and voltage‑drop analyses.
- Prepare and review deliverables including philosophies, specifications, block diagrams, and system architectures.
- Generate cable lists, schedules, bills of materials and material take‑offs.
- Support designers with cable routing, control‑room and equipment‑room layouts.
- Conduct technical bid evaluations and coordinate with telecom and security suppliers.
- Attend and execute Factory Acceptance Tests (FAT), Site Acceptance Tests (SAT) and inspections.
- Participate in plot‑plan, 3D model and coverage‑study reviews and contribute to cross‑discipline documents.
- Assist in estimating man‑hours and planning for proposals and budgets.
Required profile
- Proven experience in telecommunications and security for oil & gas, carbon capture or renewable energy projects, both on‑shore and off‑shore.
- Strong background in fibre‑optic network design, including subsea applications.
- Knowledge of marine and navigational systems such as radar, VTS, AIS and related maritime safety regulations.
- Understanding of security systems including access control, intrusion detection and video surveillance.
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in an engineering discipline; professional accreditation is a plus.
