Principal Transport Planner

About the role

We are looking for an experienced Principal Transport Planner to join the Streetscene team in Hackney. This senior position will shape transport strategy, deliver sustainable initiatives and improve the public realm across the borough.

Key responsibilities

• Lead and manage a high‑performing transport planning team, providing coaching and performance management.
• Oversee the development and delivery of transport planning projects, policies and programmes.
• Act as a senior technical specialist and represent the Council on transport and traffic management matters.
• Build and maintain strong relationships with developers, consultants, residents, community groups and elected members.
• Ensure all planning activities comply with relevant legislation, guidance and Council policies.

Required profile

• Proven experience in senior transport planning roles, preferably within local government.
• Demonstrated ability to lead teams and manage complex projects.
• Strong stakeholder‑engagement skills with senior officials, developers and community groups.
• Ability to contribute to strategic policy development and champion innovation.

• Contract role for an initial six months with the possibility of extension.

• Competitive rate of £29.49 per hour (£57,505.50 per annum equivalent).
