Probate Lawyer – Senior Associate (Remote, UK)

About the role

We are building a modern legal service to support people through probate, the next stage after a loved one’s death. As the first dedicated probate lawyer, you will work alongside product, technology and senior legal colleagues to create an initial offering focused on obtaining grants of probate, with the potential to expand into broader estate administration.

Key responsibilities

• Manage a caseload of probate matters from initial instruction through to obtaining the grant.
• Advise executors clearly and empathetically, ensuring they receive the right information at the right time.
• Prepare and submit probate applications and handle correspondence with HMRC and other organisations.
• Collaborate with product managers, engineers and senior lawyers to design the initial probate service.
• Map existing probate processes and turn them into efficient, repeatable workflows.
• Identify opportunities for software, automation and AI to reduce administrative work while maintaining legal quality.
• Develop precedents, guidance, controls and operational standards.
• Test new tools and provide practical feedback based on real casework.

Required profile

• Significant experience managing your own probate caseload.
• In‑depth knowledge of grant applications and associated HMRC requirements.
• Ability to explain technical and emotionally difficult subjects in straightforward, reassuring language.
• Strong understanding of executors’ needs throughout the probate process.
• Practical, process‑minded approach with interest in improving legal service delivery.
• Confidence working collaboratively with product and technology teams.
• Interest in using AI, automation or other technology to improve legal services.
• Sound judgement, intellectual curiosity and a low‑ego approach to teamwork.
