About the role
The Project Officer leads the archaeological direction and site management of larger and more complex fieldwork sites, ensuring performance targets are met and the quality of archaeological recording is maintained.
Key responsibilities
- Manage delivery of fieldwork to time, budget, quality and health‑and‑safety requirements.
- Line‑manage and develop staff, providing performance reviews, training and coaching.
- Assure the quality of archaeological understanding and oversee compilation of archives.
- Author fieldwork reports, stratigraphic accounts and summaries.
- Monitor project progress and report to Project Managers on budget, logistics, staff and H&S issues.
- Maintain accurate administrative records, timesheets and allocation sheets.
- Oversee deployment, maintenance and care of vehicles, plant and equipment.
- Promote public awareness of the work through displays, publications and media liaison.
- Assist in pre‑project planning, scheme preparation and liaison with landowners and utilities.
Required profile
- Knowledge of archaeological practice across all periods in Britain.
- Experience supervising large and complex fieldwork projects.
- Ability to write clear, accurate fieldwork reports and stratigraphic accounts.
- Strong communication skills and ability to organise and motivate teams.
Required skills
- Valid CSCS Health and Safety Card or recent CITB HS&E test pass.
- Full driving licence with ability to operate 4x4s and transit vans.

- Salary £37,021 – £39,718 per year (dependent on experience).
