Project Supervisor – Archaeology (Milton Keynes)

About the role

Cotswold Archaeology is seeking a Project Supervisor to lead archaeological fieldwork projects based in Milton Keynes. The role involves delivering projects on time, within budget, and to high quality and health & safety standards, while supporting the development of archaeologists and trainees.

Key responsibilities

• Deliver fieldwork projects to agreed time, budget, quality and health & safety requirements.
• Supervise archaeologists and trainees, providing performance reviews and coaching.
• Ensure the quality of site records, archives and produce accurate typescript fieldwork reports.
• Monitor project progress, budgets and logistics, reporting regularly to senior managers.
• Prepare risk assessments, health & safety documentation and oversee compliance on site.
• Assist in pre‑project planning, including scheme of investigation, trench plans and liaison with landowners and utilities.
• Maintain and record the use of vehicles, plant and equipment, ensuring timely reporting of any issues.

Required profile

• Sound knowledge of archaeological practice across all periods.
• Experience supervising small to medium fieldwork projects.
• Ability to author accurate typescript fieldwork reports.
• Strong organisational and leadership skills.
• Good understanding of UK health and safety legislation.
• Full UK driving licence and willingness to drive 4x4s and vans.

Required skills

• CSCS Health and Safety Card (or ability to pass CITB HS&E test).
• Full driving licence.
• Proficiency in archaeological recording and reporting.
• Competence in preparing health and safety risk assessments.
