Python Developer – APIs & Backend Services

About the role

Barclays is seeking a Python Developer to design and build production‑grade APIs and backend services that power high‑performance data platforms. You will create and maintain client‑facing SDKs, implement robust caching strategies, and optimise systems for high throughput and low latency.

Key responsibilities

• Develop, test, and deploy scalable REST and async APIs using Python.
• Design, version, and document client‑facing SDKs ensuring backward compatibility.
• Build and operate caching layers (e.g., Redis, Memcached) with appropriate TTLs and eviction policies.
• Collaborate with product managers, designers, and engineers to define requirements and deliver integrated solutions.
• Participate in code reviews, promote code quality, and share knowledge across teams.
• Apply secure coding practices and implement comprehensive unit testing.

Required profile

• Strong Python engineering experience building production‑grade APIs and backend services.
• Proven ability to design and maintain SDKs with clear documentation.
• Hands‑on experience with caching technologies such as Redis or Memcached.
• Familiarity with high‑throughput, low‑latency system optimisation.
• Understanding of service reliability practices (observability, metrics, error handling, retries).
• Experience with cloud‑native deployment, containers, CI/CD, and Infrastructure as Code.
• Knowledge of the kdb+ stack is a plus.
