Recreation Craftsperson – Forest of Dean

About the role

The Forest of Dean seeks a dedicated Recreation Craftsperson to keep visitor sites clean, safe and welcoming. Based at Beechenhurst (GL16 7EL), you will work across the forest’s recreation areas, supporting a team that delivers high‑quality experiences for over one million annual visitors.

Key responsibilities

• Collect and dispose of rubbish from bins daily, perform litter picking and general site tidying.
• Unlock gates and barriers each morning according to seasonal schedules.
• Maintain and repair signage, fences, play‑area safety equipment and other forest furniture.
• Seasonal mowing, strimming and occasional chemical spraying (with proper certification).
• Inspect and service public toilets, restock supplies and report faults.
• Assist with occasional out‑of‑hours events and emergency clean‑up tasks.

Required profile

• Resilient and adaptable, able to work outdoors in all weather conditions.
• Physically fit for demanding manual tasks and able to travel on foot, bike or vehicle across the forest.
• Willing to work a rotating seven‑day roster, including weekends, public holidays and occasional evenings.

Required skills

• Experience with outdoor maintenance tasks such as mowing, strimming and basic landscaping.
• Ability to install, repair and paint signs and fences.
• Knowledge of waste segregation and safe handling of recyclable materials.
• Certification for chemical spraying (or willingness to obtain training).
