Research Engineer – Pretraining for Large Language Models

About the role

Anthropic is looking for a Research Engineer to join its Pretraining team and help build the next generation of large language models. You will work at the intersection of cutting‑edge research and practical engineering to create safe, steerable, and trustworthy AI systems.

Key responsibilities

• Conduct research and implement solutions in model architecture, algorithms, data processing, and optimizer development.
• Lead small research projects independently while collaborating on larger initiatives.
• Design, run, and analyze scientific experiments to advance understanding of large language models.
• Optimize and scale training infrastructure for efficiency and reliability.
• Develop and improve developer tooling to boost team productivity.

Required profile

• Advanced degree (MS or PhD) in Computer Science, Machine Learning, or a related field.
• Strong software‑engineering background with a track record of building complex systems.
• Expertise in Python and deep‑learning frameworks (PyTorch preferred).
• Experience with large‑scale ML, especially language models, and ability to balance research goals with engineering constraints.
• Excellent communication skills and a collaborative mindset.
