Second Chef – Care Home (Birtley)

About the role

We are looking for a qualified Second Chef to join our care home in Birtley. Working 26 hours a week on an alternating weekend pattern, you will support the Head Chef in delivering hotel‑standard, nutritious meals for our residents.

Key responsibilities

• Manage the kitchen in the Head Chef’s absence.
• Assist in menu development and tailor dishes to residents’ preferences.
• Prepare dishes using fresh, seasonal produce to the highest quality standards.
• Maintain a warm, efficient and enjoyable kitchen environment.
• Work within budget, conduct regular audits and control stock levels.

Required profile

• Personable, warm approach with genuine interest in residents’ wellbeing.
• City & Guilds/NVQ/SVQ (or equivalent) culinary qualification.
• Good understanding of nutrition and HACCP principles.
• Experience working with fresh seasonal food.
