SEMH Mentor – Support for Young People

About the role
The SEMH Mentor will work within a specialist school in Reading, providing one‑to‑one and small‑group support to students who experience deregulated behaviours and emotional challenges. You will help pupils develop confidence, resilience and the ability to regulate their emotions, enabling them to engage fully with their education.
Key responsibilities
- Support students individually and in small groups throughout the school day.
- Assist pupils in managing emotions and behaviours to create a calm learning environment.
- Build trusting, meaningful relationships with young people.
- Promote positive behaviour and active engagement in lessons.
- Collaborate with teachers, pastoral staff and external professionals.
- Encourage development of social, emotional and communication skills.
Required profile
- Experience working with young people in education, youth work, care, coaching or mentoring.
- Strong relationship‑building abilities.
- Calm, patient and resilient in challenging situations.
- Genuine passion for supporting vulnerable youth.
- Understanding of consistency, empathy and positive reinforcement.
