SEMH Mentor – Support Students with Emotional & Behavioural Needs

About the role
The SEMH Mentor will work within a specialist school in Reading, providing one‑to‑one and small‑group support to students who experience deregulated behaviours and emotional challenges. You will help young people develop confidence, resilience and the ability to regulate their emotions, enabling them to engage fully with their education.
Key responsibilities
- Deliver personalised support to students on an individual and small‑group basis.
- Assist pupils in managing emotions and behaviours throughout the school day.
- Build trusting, supportive relationships with young people.
- Promote positive behaviour and active participation in learning.
- Collaborate with teachers, pastoral staff and external professionals.
- Foster development of social, emotional and communication skills.
- Create a safe, inclusive learning environment.
Required profile
- Experience working with young people in education, youth work, care, coaching or mentoring.
- Strong relationship‑building abilities and patience in challenging situations.
- Genuine passion for supporting vulnerable students.
- Understanding of consistency, empathy and positive reinforcement.
- Experience with social, emotional, mental health or behavioural needs is advantageous.
