SEMH Teaching Assistant

About the role
This position supports children with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs across several schools in North Birmingham. The role can be full‑time, temporary or permanent, working with pupils from KS1 to KS4 in both SEND/SEMH Trusts and local authority schools.
Key responsibilities
- Assist teachers in delivering lessons and managing classroom activities.
- Provide one‑to‑one or small‑group support for pupils with SEMH or SEND needs.
- Help maintain a safe, calm and inclusive learning environment.
- Monitor pupil behaviour and report concerns to senior staff.
- Support the implementation of individual education plans (IEPs) and mental‑health strategies.
Required profile
- Empathetic, patient and resilient with the ability to handle challenging behaviour.
- Willingness to work with children aged 5‑16 in a school setting.
- Experience in SEMH or SEND environments is essential; school experience is desirable but not mandatory.
- Ability to work collaboratively with teachers, support staff and external agencies.
Required skills
- Basic understanding of SEMH and SEND frameworks.
- Effective communication and observation skills.
- Capability to follow safeguarding and child‑protection procedures.
