SEMH Tutor – GCSE Level 1:1 Support (Portsmouth)

About the role

We are looking for dedicated SEMH Tutors to provide one‑to‑one support for children and young people in Portsmouth, covering Early Years through to GCSE level. The role is term‑time only, flexible up to 30 hours per week, and focuses on delivering core subjects and specialised SEMH interventions.

Key responsibilities

• Deliver core subjects (Maths, English, Science) or SEMH‑specific curriculum in a 1:1 setting.
• Implement positive behaviour management strategies and a therapeutic approach.
• Conduct baseline academic and emotional assessments to tailor support.
• Prepare daily/weekly progress reports and liaise with external professionals (SALT, OT, social workers).
• Record attendance using the provider’s attendance software.
• Support learners in transitioning to mainstream or specialist education settings.

Required profile

• Proven experience teaching or tutoring children with SEND/SEMH needs.
• Background in education, youth work or therapeutic settings.
• QTS or HLTA preferred, but two years of relevant UK experience without formal qualification is acceptable.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Compassionate, dependable and proactive attitude.

Required skills

• Use of attendance software for daily reporting.
• Familiarity with the bespoke tutor platform provided by AP Education.
