SEN Teaching Assistant – Flexible Day‑to‑Day Cover

About the role

We are seeking an empathetic SEN Teaching Assistant to provide flexible, day‑to‑day cover in a specialist school in Leeds. You will work alongside teachers, therapists and families to support pupils aged 2‑19 with complex learning needs, ensuring they receive personalised, multi‑sensory learning experiences.

Key responsibilities

• Deliver 1:1 and small‑group activities aligned with each pupil’s Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP).
• Use specialist communication methods such as PECS, Makaton and visual schedules to support non‑verbal and pre‑verbal learners.
• Assist with physical mobility and facilitate sensory breaks, quiet‑space routines and de‑escalation strategies.
• Collaborate with lead teachers, healthcare professionals and therapists to maintain a safe, structured learning environment.
• Promote independence during learning tasks, meals and transition periods.

Required profile

• Strong empathy, patience and creativity when working with pupils who have severe or profound learning difficulties.
• Flexibility to step into different classrooms and age groups on an ad‑hoc basis.
• Commitment to inclusive education and ability to follow individualised support plans.

Required skills

• Proficiency with PECS (Picture Exchange Communication System).
• Knowledge of Makaton sign language.
• Experience using visual schedules to aid communication and routine.
