SEN Teaching Assistant – Leighton Buzzard

About the role

We are partnering with schools in Leighton Buzzard to recruit caring and motivated SEN Teaching Assistants. You will work closely with pupils who have profound and complex needs, helping them engage with learning, develop communication skills and gain confidence in a supportive school environment.

Key responsibilities

• Provide one‑to‑one and small‑group support tailored to each pupil’s needs.
• Assist pupils with learning activities and encourage classroom participation.
• Support personal care tasks such as feeding, toileting, dressing and mobility when required.
• Use communication approaches including PECS, Makaton, symbols and visual timetables.
• Help implement EHCPs, individual learning plans and care plans.
• Collaborate with teachers, therapists and other professionals to ensure consistent support.
• Promote independence, confidence and social skills among pupils.
• Maintain a calm, positive and inclusive learning environment.

Required profile

• Experience working with children or young people with SEN is advantageous.
• Understanding of complex needs such as ASD, PMLD and physical disabilities.
• Patient, compassionate and approachable demeanor.
• Confidence in supporting pupils with personal care requirements.
• Ability to build positive relationships and work effectively as part of a team.
• Flexible, dependable and eager to learn.
• Passionate about helping each pupil achieve their potential.

Required skills

• PECS (Picture Exchange Communication System).
• Makaton sign language.
• Use of symbols and visual timetables.
