SEN Teaching Assistant – Support ASD & SLCN Students

About the role

We are seeking a compassionate Teaching Assistant to join the ASD Unit of a well‑regarded mixed secondary school in East Ham, East London. You will work with students aged 11‑16 who have Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and Speech, Language and Communication Needs (SLCN) across Key Stages 3 to 5.

Key responsibilities

• Deliver one‑to‑one and small‑group interventions focused on communication, social interaction, emotional regulation and academic engagement.
• Support the implementation of EHCP targets, individual support plans and communication strategies.
• Use structured approaches, visual supports and personalised strategies to meet each learner’s needs.
• Encourage positive behaviour and assist students in managing transitions throughout the school day.

Required profile

• Experience supporting children or young people with Autism and/or Speech and Language needs (desirable but not essential).
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
• Understanding of Autism and potential barriers within a mainstream secondary setting.
• Ability to adapt support to a range of learning, behavioural and emotional needs.

Required skills

• Knowledge of strategies that support communication, sensory regulation and social development.
